How to Decode a VIN to Order the Right Parts
Year / Make / Model is rarely enough to guarantee fitment — engine variant, trim, and production date matter too. The VIN encodes all of it.
Where to find your VIN
- Dashboard, driver-side, visible through windshield
- Driver-side door jamb sticker
- Vehicle registration / insurance card
What each position means
A 17-character VIN breaks down as:
- 1–3 World Manufacturer Identifier (country + manufacturer)
- 4–8 Vehicle attributes (model, body, engine, restraint system)
- 9 Check digit
- 10 Model year
- 11 Assembly plant
- 12–17 Serial number
Position 10 is the most useful single character — it tells you the model year (with letters skipping I, O, Q, U, Z).
Decoding online
Free decoders from NHTSA (vpic.nhtsa.dot.gov) and most major parts retailers will expand a VIN into a full vehicle spec sheet. Always paste the full 17 characters — partial VINs return ambiguous results.
