Winter Car Maintenance Checklist (10-Minute Version)
Cold weather amplifies every small problem your car already has. Run through this checklist before the first freeze.
Battery
Cold cuts cranking power by up to 35%. A battery older than 3 years should be load-tested. Replace if capacity is below 70%.
Tires
- Check tread depth — at least 4/32” for winter conditions
- Inflate to the door-jamb pressure (cold pressure drops about 1 PSI per 10°F)
- Consider dedicated winter tires below 7°C / 45°F
Coolant
Test the freeze point with a cheap hydrometer. A 50/50 antifreeze mix protects to roughly −37°C.
Wipers and washer fluid
Replace blades if streaking. Switch to a washer fluid rated for sub-zero temperatures.
Lights
Days are shorter; verify all bulbs work — headlights, brakes, turn signals, plate lamp.
Belts and hoses
Visual check for cracks. Cold makes brittle rubber fail fast.
Brakes
Listen for new noises. Salt and slush accelerate rotor and caliper wear.
Heater and defroster
Verify both heat and defrost airflow work — fogged windows are an emergency.
Emergency kit
Blanket, flashlight, jumper cables, ice scraper, traction aids (sand or mats), water, snack bars.
Fuel level
Keep the tank above ½ in winter. Condensation in a low tank can freeze fuel lines and kill the fuel pump.
